Shopify POS vs a dedicated POS in Pakistan: the real difference

If you already sell on Shopify — or plan to — the obvious question is whether Shopify POS can run your counter too. The short answer: it can, but it was designed for a card-paying customer in a Shopify Payments country. Here is what that means at a real Pakistani counter, and where a dedicated POS earns its keep. For the platform-level picture, see SYEZPOS vs Shopify.

What Shopify POS actually is

Shopify POS is an extension of a Shopify store, not a standalone product. POS Lite comes bundled with every plan and covers the basics: sell in person, sync products and orders with the online store, accept payments. POS Pro — at $89 per location per month — adds the features a serious counter needs: staff roles and permissions, stock transfers between locations, purchase orders and deeper reporting.

Two things follow from that design. First, the POS assumes Shopify Payments — which is not available in Pakistan, so card processing needs a workaround. Second, the counter inherits the platform's assumptions: an online-first catalog, card-centric checkout and connectivity the till depends on.

What the counter actually does in Pakistan

Walk into a busy shop in Liberty Market or Saddar and the tender mix is cash first, wallets second, bank transfer for bigger bills — and for regulars, udhaar on a khata. The cashier is scanning fast, splitting payments, answering WhatsApp pickups and closing the day against a cash drawer that must match to the rupee.

A dedicated Pakistani POS is built around exactly that: cash-heavy tender types, JazzCash and EasyPaisa at the till, RAAST and bank transfer with references, customer credit ledgers, FBR-ready fiscal invoices, day-close variance — and billing that continues when the internet drops mid-sale. For the counter feature checklist, our POS software in Pakistan guide covers what to test in any demo.

Where Shopify POS is genuinely strong

Honesty first: if your business is online-first and the counter is secondary — a pop-up, a weekend stall, a showroom where most sales already happen on the website — Shopify POS keeps products and orders unified with the store you are already paying for. For that shape of business, adding it is simpler than running a second system.

The trouble starts when the counter becomes the main channel: cash and wallet payments need workarounds, udhaar has nowhere to live, the books land in a separate tool, and a dropped connection stalls the till during the afternoon rush.

The cost picture in rupees

Shopify POS Lite is technically included — but only inside a Shopify plan starting around US$39 a month. A counter that needs Pro features (staff roles, stock transfers, proper reporting) adds $89 per location. In rupees, a realistic Shopify + POS Pro setup sits well above Rs 30,000 a month before apps — billed in USD.

A dedicated cloud POS like SYEZPOS publishes flat PKR pricing: free start, Rs 3,000 a month for a single store, Rs 7,000 for Enterprise with multi-store, ecommerce, API and AI reports — with the online storefront and accounting inside the same product rather than separate bills.

Which one fits which shop

  • Online-first brand, occasional in-person selling: Shopify POS Lite keeps things simple inside a tool you already pay for.
  • Counter-first retail that also sells online: a dedicated POS with a native storefront gives you one stock count without the USD billing or payment workarounds.
  • Multi-branch retail with udhaar and FBR requirements: a dedicated Pakistan-built system is not optional — it is the only thing that handles the workflow natively.
The cleanest test: run a full day in each demo — cash sale, wallet sale, udhaar entry, return, and day close with a variance. Whichever system finishes that list without a workaround is your POS.

Frequently asked questions

Does Shopify POS work in Pakistan?

Technically yes, but it is designed around Shopify Payments and card-centric checkout — a poor fit for a counter running on cash, wallets, COD and bank transfer. Shopify Payments is not available in Pakistan.

Is Shopify POS Lite free?

POS Lite is bundled with every Shopify plan, but the plan itself starts around US$39 a month. POS Pro — needed for staff roles, stock transfers and advanced retail features — adds $89 per location per month.

What does a dedicated POS do that Shopify POS doesn't?

Udhaar ledgers, cash-heavy tender mixes, local wallet and bank payments, FBR-ready invoicing, day-close variance and offline billing — plus accounting in the same system instead of a separate tool.

Can I use both — Shopify online and a dedicated POS at the counter?

You can, but you inherit the seam: two catalogs, two stock counts and a person reconciling them daily. A system where the storefront and counter share one database removes that work entirely.
